Privacy policy

Moments of Being is a reading app run by Violeta Perea Rubio in the United Kingdom (“we”). We are the controller of your personal data under UK GDPR. Questions or requests: hello@example.com.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and first name, and which sign-in you used (email, Google or Apple). If you sign in with Apple and hide your email, we only see Apple’s relay address.
- Your onboarding answers: your reading goal, what gets in the way, how much you read, your taste, books you mention, your reading pace, your first reflection, and, only if you choose to give them, your birth year and gender.
- What you do in the app: your plan, reading sessions, shelves, notes, reflections, posts and the quotes you save (including a small copy of any photo of a page).
- Your letter preference: whether you asked for our weekly reading letter.
- The waitlist: if you join it on our website, your email address.
We don’t use advertising, tracking or analytics tools, and we don’t sell your data. Reading reminders are scheduled on your phone; we don’t send them from our servers.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
- To run your account, build your plan and keep your reading in sync across devices (to provide the service you asked for: contract).
- To personalise your plan with AI and read quotes from photos, only if you allow it (consent; you can change this any time on the Plan tab).
- To send the weekly letter, only if you asked for it (consent; unsubscribe from any letter).
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse, for example daily limits on AI features (legitimate interests).
AI: what goes to Claude
If you allow it, we send your onboarding answers (never your email address) to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, to choose your books and write your reflection questions. When you photograph a page, we send the photo to Claude to read the text. Anthropic processes this for us under its commercial terms, does not use it to train its models, and keeps it only briefly for safety purposes. If you say no, you get a hand-picked plan and type quotes yourself.
Who else handles your data
- Supabase: our database and sign-in provider, which stores your account and reading data.
- Vercel: hosts our website and the servers the app talks to.
- Anthropic: the AI features above, only with your permission.
- Google or Apple: only if you choose to sign in with them.
- Open Library (Internet Archive): when you search for a book, the search words are sent to look up titles and covers. No personal details are sent.
Some of these providers process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where they do, transfers are covered by the UK’s adequacy regulations or the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while you have an account. Delete your account in the app (Plan tab → “Delete my account and data”) and we remove your account and everything in it from our servers straight away; backups held by our database provider are cleared within days. Waitlist emails are deleted when we launch or when you ask.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, ask for it in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time. Email hello@example.com; we’ll reply within a month. If you’re not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Moments of Being is for people aged 13 and over. We don’t knowingly collect data from younger children.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
